Instagram Algorithm Change 2021

The Instagram algorithm has changed to promote eCommerce and video, what does that mean for your business?

We know it can be challenging to stay relevant to your customers using social media when platforms are constantly changing their algorithms. Rather than give up, here is the latest information to ensure you are maximizing value for your customers.

The Introduction of Reels

The social media platform TikTok has taken the world by storm throughout 2021, forcing other platforms like YouTube, Twitter and Instagram to adapt quickly. To keep people on the Instagram platform, the platform's director shared that they will prioritize videos over photos. He even went so far as to say,

"We are no longer a photo-sharing application or an application to share square photos."

So, what exactly does this mean for you?

Business Impact of Algorithm Changes

With recent changes, many creators have taken to social media to prove that using Instagram's reel features can result in rapid platform growth, just like TikTok. One example you can use for reference is @pinksparrowsocial, who confirmed that in 30 days, she could grow an account from 900 followers to over 10,000. With stats like these, creators have proven that your business can still go viral with the right niche and the right strategy (almost) overnight, suggesting the social media world is not too saturated to enter if you haven't already.

More impressive than the number is the followers themselves. TikTok has gained popularity for their recommendations on the for you page (FYP), curating videos to meet each user's likes. Following a similar format, growth through reels has proven to generate a community of engaged followers who are more than a vanity metric.

For your business, this might mean your strategy will pivot slightly to favour high-quality video. The square photos taken in dark lighting just won't cut it anymore! Although the thought of your video living on social media may scare you, the reality is that this algorithm change is not one to take lightly and for those willing to pivot big payoffs!
